German word of the day: Stau – A traffic jam lasting an hour or longer and extending for a distance of 10 km or more, typically occurring on the Autobahn. A Stau is characterized by people getting out of their cars, peering optimistically off into the distance, striking up conversations with strangers, sneaking off into the woods, and snacking.  On-location artists have been known to draw the scene.

Having survived the Stau, we arrived in Goslar, checked in to our rather funky hotel in the woods, drove the short distance in to town, wandered through a bit of the Altstadt (old town), and had a delightful dinner just off the main square.

More to follow tomorrow.
